Visit 2003

After 32 years, in 2003, Annegret Krause and her husband Berthold decided to visit the place again where she had worked and lived from 1968 to 1971. In the meantime, street urchins and orphans had arrived at the former training center of the Kenya Red Cross, looking for a place to stay. However, the conditions the children there lived on were deeply distressing . Thus theystarted to support this orphanage in the town of Nyeri.

From the outside, the hostel made a poor and bad impression.

The kids were as curious as all the children in the world.

At that time, 50 kids were looked after in the hostel.

The boys dormitory was clapped-out, the beds were bad and mattresses and blankets were missing.

The girls’ dormitory wasn’t better.

The common-room was in a state of complete dilapidation.

The kitchen was soot-covered and unbelievably dirty.

In spite of everything, we faced happy and lovable kids.
